In honor of Earth Day 2019, Meow Wolf, in partnership with Santa Fe Community College (SFCC), introduced a life-sized blue whale sculpture named “Ethyl” at SFCC’s main campus. Weighing an average of 300,000 pounds, the blue whale is the largest living creature on Earth. Sadly, this number also represents the weight of plastic that ends up in our oceans every nine minutes.
Made from hand-recycled plastic and measuring a length of 82 feet, Ethyl's dramatic size is multi-layered: take in the awe of this beautiful creature, bring awareness to the issue of plastic pollution, and address climate change with the goal of looking to the future to foster a more sustainable, healthy environment.
In this sequel to Ethyl: Part 1, we meet the artists who created this beautiful sculpture, Yustina Salnikova and Joel Stockdill.
We also witness a green corn ceremony - an Indigenous tradition representing renewal, gratitude, purification, and communal solidarity.
Ethyl can still be seen from northbound i-25 just before exiting to downtown Santa Fe, NM. Ethyl is visited by onlookers and school groups from across the state, serving as a reminder that we must change our terrible habits with plastic and waste.
