Located in north-central New Mexico at roughly 107,000 acres lies the Caja del Rio - one of America’s most iconic landscapes and an area of profound cultural, historical, spiritual, archaeological, and environmental significance.
The Caja contains thousands of ancient petroglyphs and significant archaeological sites and is considered sacred to many Native American Pueblos and Tribes throughout the region. In addition, the Caja also contains historic and cultural significance to Spanish settlers and continues to be utilized by the many communities surrounding this important landscape.
To ensure the protection of the Caja, a diverse, inclusive, collaborative, and sustainable group of local community leaders have formed the Caja coalition that is focused on achieving long-term preservation, lasting stewardship, and adaptive co-management of these sacred lands.
