In honor of Earth Day 2019, Meow Wolf, in partnership with Santa Fe Community College, introduced a life-sized blue whale sculpture named “Ethyl” at SFCC’s main campus. The blue whale is the largest creature that has ever lived on Earth, weighing about 300,000 pounds which is the equivalent to the approximate weight of plastic that ends up in the ocean every nine minutes.
Made from hand-recycled plastic trash, Ethyl's 82-foot-long dramatic size is to bring awareness to our planet’s massive issue with plastic pollution, address climate change, and look to the future to foster a more sustainable, healthy environment.
In this sequel to Ethyl: Part 1, we meet the artists, Yustina Salnikova and Joel Stockdill, who came up with the idea to create her.
We also witness a green corn ceremony, an Indigenous tradition representing renewal, gratitude, purification, and communal solidarity.
Ethyl can still be seen from northbound i-25 just before exiting to downtown Santa Fe, NM. She continues to serve as a reminder that we must change our terrible habits with plastic.
