“Climate Disruption New Mexico: A Changing Climate & Landscape” is a video storytelling project that captures the human experience of how extreme weather events and climate change is affecting New Mexico communities. It serves as a call-to-action to raise awareness, inspire change, support communities, and address the growing threats facing the state. From raging forest fires to devastating floods, New Mexico is facing a crisis that threatens the lives of its residents. This project takes an in-depth look at how our communities are being impacted, and what we can do to support them.
The opportunity to work on this project came to me while the New Mexico wildfires were still burning out of control. A friend and colleague reached out to ask if I'd be interested in working on a storytelling project focused on climate change. We both saw this was an opportunity to make an impact; to help share the stories of the many people who were being displaced and overlooked. Shortly after beginning my outreach, I was introduced to the Gomez family through a professional connection. Immediately, I knew this was our story.
In April 2022, Northern New Mexico was hit by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon fire, which became the largest and most destructive fire in the state’s history. “Burned” tells the human story of how this extreme weather event affected Northern New Mexico communities and how local families and leaders are coming together to rebuild and recover in the face of climate disruption.
